Staffordshire’s Newcastle A Running Hotspot
Newcastle AC is one of the top clubs in Staffordshire - prestigious history and great facilities. runABC found out more …
A club with a history?
Yes, we celebrated our half century last year and we’re looking forward to 100 up in 2064!
And great facilities?
We are very fortunate to have our own clubhouse at Ashfields Track on Ashfields Road. And as the name suggests we have our own dedicated track adjacent to the clubhouse.
So a great base to conquer the world?
That might be stretching it! But we do have a 300 plus membership, a good mix of seniors and juniors. We’re involved in all the disciplines - road running, cross country, track and field. We compete in all the local competitions with the North Staffs Road Runners Association and the North Staffs Cross Country series, both extremely popular.
When do you meet?
In the winter we run on the road but go off-road into Apedale Country Park in the summer. Monday and Wednesdays are for senior runners and we split into various groups depending on pacing before heading off from the clubhouse around a designated route in Newcastle. Tuesdays and Thursdays are for the juniors but seniors can come along on these evenings and do intervals/hill reps.
There will be informal weekend long runs - details posted on our Facebook page.
Newcastle AC provided two members of the GB team at the 1980 Moscow Olympics while Bryan Dale and John Davies competed in the vets over 50 category for GB in cross country.
Tell us about Dales Dash ...
Bill Barker and other members of the club have worked hard with organisers Newcastle Countryside Project to make the Dales Dash one of the highlights of the year. The Dash was started by Bill’s late wife Margaret, in 2004. Sadly Margaret passed away in 2008, but she is remembered in the prizes for first lady, first Newcastle AC lady, and first male and female member under 16. The club also organises the Newcastle 10K, a March event that is an early counter in the North Staffs Road series.
Favourite local race for members?
There’s always a big contingent at the Potters Alf in June. Michael Ridley, Leon Bailey and Martyn Davies all clocked fast times this year while Michelle Buckle was our top lady and the improving Rachel Degg also turned in a sterling performance. Hot work though, the thermometer always climbs on the day of the ‘Arf. The Stafford Half and the Alsager 5 attract a big squad of Newcastle AC runners too.
Any club trips overseas?
Members will race at all the big European races - Berlin, Amsterdam and Paris marathons. We’ve also had a small group at Palma Marathon. There’s talk of an overseas excursion but we’re still at the planning stage. We do take parties to some of the more attractive English (and Welsh!) events - the Conwy Half is a favourite.
