Going For It in Gloucestershire

Gloucester Half Marathon

Gloucestershire is the destination this weekend (13-14 January) with four races taking place within this fascinating county. Get wet and muddy over 9 miles or try a 50K as your first ultra, the choice is yours to make.

It all happens on Sunday beginning with the Riverbank Rollick from Thornbury Running Club and interestingly enough, the first of their four races this year. Four seems to be the magic number.

This gruelling 9-miler is held on different types of terrain, from bridlepaths and trails to footpaths and fields so wear off-road shoes for this one. There is a river crossing and steep sections that are likely to be slippery and require a ‘three points of contact’ approach when climbing up them. However, there will be tea and cakes afterwards to look forward to and all donations along with race proceeds will go to Brain Tumour Support.

We trek over to the cathedral city of Gloucester for our remaining three events all of which are hosted by Beyond the Limitations. They are a half marathon, winter marathon/marathon relay and a 50K (31 miles) and held on a new course this year that starts from Quedgeley and passes through the villages of Colethrop and Haresfield. All three races are on rural roads and consist of either two, four or five loops plus an out and back leg. Each runner is given an arm band to ensure they complete the correct number of loops.

Note: there is a time limit for the marathon and 50K.
