Great New Route For Great Birmingham Run

Runners Starting At The Great Birmingham Run

The Simplyhealth Great Birmingham Run has a new route and for some, there is a pleasant surprise. The infamous hill has been removed…

Broad Street a.k.a. the ‘Golden Mile’ is where the action is. In a reversal of last year’s route, it will be acting as the start for the 2018 Great Birmingham Run with the finish on Jennens Road. This half marathon is one of several events from Great Run who host a series of 5ks and 10ks in various locations across the UK.

So, what can runners look forward to this year? Apart from a big city start on Broad Street, they will enjoy scenic views of Cannon Hill Park and Selly Park; field their way around the world-famous Edgbaston Cricket Ground, inhale chocolatey aromas from Bournville and saving the best until last, stretch their legs down Lee Bank Middleway. They will cross the finish line to deafening applause from the waiting crowds on Jennens Road at the Aston University Campus Charity Village.

In previous years, the hill at Mile 11 was the nemesis of tired runners who can now exact their revenge with a sprint down this hill. In the words of one runner from the 2017 Great Birmingham Run: “Down the hill? New PB here I come!”. The switch from ascent to descent has tempted others to give this half marathon a try plus the fast start is an added incentive. The new route is viewed as 'more interesting' this year which the organisers hope will encourage people to enter.

The 2018 Simplyhealth Great Birmingham Run takes place on Sunday 14 October. Visit the Great Run website for more details.
