“This above all, to thine own self be true”. A fitting reference for the Shakespeare Marathon and Half Marathon where nearly 3,500 runners put that into practice around a picturesque course in Stratford-upon-Avon.
A Shakespearean Triumph At Stratford
This popular event was a resounding success: ably organised by the Rotary Club of Stratford-upon-Avon, with most of the proceeds going to the local hospice and other local charities benefitting as well. Plenty of encouragement from marshals and supporters for the runners and even the weather played its part.
The half marathon runners completed one lap with two laps for those doing the full 26.2 miles. All finishers received a special medal inscribed with a quote from Shakespeare’s The Tempest, Act 3, Scene 1.
Adam Holland of NOTFAST RC won the marathon in 2:34:51 followed by Nick Jones of Oxford City AC in 2:46:52. Darren Russell of Trafford AC came third in 2:47:17.
Josie Hinton of London Heathside won the women’s marathon race in 3:14:39. Second female was Amanda O’Leary of Knowle and Dorridge RC in 3:14:36 with Alayne Malkin of TRA, third in 3:17:35.
Alasdair Russell of Kendal AC was the winner of the half marathon in 1:10:38 followed by Corea Orlando of Birchfield Harriers in 1:11:18. David Bell of Cirencester AC took third place in a time of 1:11:42. Kate Wright of Stratford-upon-Avon AC was fastest lady in 1:23:40 followed by Donna Allen of Hook Norton Harriers in 1:27:29. Teammate Hannah Rogan was third in a time of 1:29:32.
The half and full marathon rounded off a busy weekend in which celebrations took place marking the 400th anniversary of Stratford’s most famous resident, William Shakespeare. With Lady Mayor Tessa Bates taking time out of her busy schedule to present prizes and medals.
