Hug a hoody was particularly apt at a cold and wet Clowne Half Marathon in Derbyshire yesterday (26 November). These sweatshirts received a warm welcome from the runners along with the post-race cake.
It was a 9.30am start for the 32nd year of this half marathon and fun run with over 700 entrants ready to tackle a new route from last year. They set off from The Arc Sports Centre and proceeded along a mixture of footpaths and open/closed roads with a few hills in an anti-clockwise direction. There was no shortage of encouragement by marshals and the local population who braved the inclement conditions to cheer the runners as they passed by.
This was a successful day for running clubs beginning with the letter ‘R’: Richard Harris of Rotherham Harriers and AC won the Clowne Half Marathon in 1:15:05 followed by Benjamin Harris of Retford AC in 1:15:44. Luke Beresford of Ripley RC was over a minute behind to take third place in 1:16:47.
Hollie Elliott of Charnwood AC won the women’s race in 1:29:03 with Sarah Attwood of York Knavesmire Harriers second in 1:29:15. Fiona Kesteven of Totley AC came third in 1:29:42.
The last runner crossed the line in 2:51:48. A full set of results can be found on our race listings
This race was organised by Clowne RR and is part of the Derbyshire County Championships. There were vouchers from retailer Up and Running for the 1st, 2nd and 3rd male and female plus age category winners and black hoodies for all half marathon finishers. Further ways to keep out the cold included hats from the Big Bobble Hat stall and hot drinks and bacon sandwiches from Barlborough and Clowne W.I.
