Night time was the right time for runners at the second event in the Starlight Trails Relay Series on a cold Tuesday evening (5 December). They used the stars and their head torches to navigate a testing off-road course in Ticknall, Derbyshire
Hosted by Peak Running, the event attracted 45 teams from 12 clubs across the East Midlands who took a shine to this new type of race aimed at new as well as experienced runners. The organiser hopes this will encourage people to have a go at trail running and in a safe, supportive environment.
There was a good competitive spirit at the Tuesday evening race as teams competed four x 2.5 miles on grass, trails and woodland paths that were signed and marshalled. There are three events in the series with each one becoming progressively harder, i.e. longer and tougher courses. The series is open to male, female and mixed teams with prizes for the winners plus the best performing team. There is also an inter-club competition.
South Derbyshire Road Runners were leading lights at this event, fielding nine teams and winning both the men’s and women’s categories. Shelton Striders claimed the top spot in the mixed category with team Starlight Express who have a perfect score in the series. A team with the name Melbourne Supersonic won the Jog Derbyshire category.
In the inter-club competition, Derwent Runners have scored highly in all three categories and currently head the table after two events.
The third and final race in the series takes place at Allestree Park on 11 January 2018.
