The final two events in the Great Run series, the Bupa Great Birmingham Run (19 October) and the Bupa Great South Run (26 October), mark the last opportunities for clubs to take part in the Great Run Club Challenge. Affiliated clubs will be in with a chance of winning a trip to the Great Ethiopian Run, Africa’s biggest road race, in November.
To qualify, clubs have to be affiliated with England Athletics and field at least seven male and seven female registered athletes in a Great Run event. The average time for all registered participants from qualifying clubs is calculated and the winners receive £500, as well as a place in the draw for the chance to win the once in a lifetime adventure: to train and race in the country that has produced some of the world’s most iconic distance running stars - Ethiopia.
The trip includes a stay at the famous Yaya Village, located outside the city of Addis Ababa, at an altitude of 2,700 metres above sea level. The winning team from the draw will also enjoy a personal meeting with the world’s greatest ever distance runner, Haile Gebrselassie, before taking part in the Great Ethiopian Run with 37,000 other runners.
As it stands,, 22 clubs have qualified to take part in the Great Run Club Challenge at the Great Birmingham Run, with a further 27 still in with a chance if more club members enter. 19 clubs are in the mix for Portsmouth’s Great South Run, with another 30 just a few entries away from being eligible.
