Carl Moulton put on a classy performance to claim victory at Sunday’s (4 June) Westbridge 5. Moulton of Boalloy RC crossed the finish line in 26:46 with Simon Myatt of Trentham RC coming second in 26:58, and Mark Dalkins (Cheadle RC) third in 27:57.
Trentham RC's Kristina Defries was fastest female, winning in 30:38. Wendy Mullineux of Heanor RC was second in 32:02 – another good result for the Derbyshire-based runner in her comeback from a serious knee injury. Michelle Buckle of Newcastle (Staffs) AC completed the podium in 33:18.
Sally Haycock was the midpoint runner in 39:33 and the last runner finished in 67:51.
The race is one of four organised by Stone Master Marathoners and is a well-established fixture in the North Staffs Road Runners Association (NSRRA) programme. The event is held at the same time as the town’s annual festival with a significant percentage of the entry fees donated to various charities.
Starting at 9.30am from Westbridge Park in Stone, Staffordshire, runners followed a flat, multi-terrain course that is popular for its PB-potential. They continued along the Trent and Mersey canal towards the village of Aston before turning back towards the finish at Westbridge Park. The flat route is a contrast to the club’s Spring Treble Series of hilly, off-road races held in April.
