Doubling Up The Distance

The Start Of The 2015 Double Or Quit 5 And 10 Race

Anyone who enjoys a fast 10k (or 5k) is in luck this weekend (27-28 August) as there are a few taking place. There is also a half and full marathon for those who prefer to double this and add some more miles…

With a reference to the American comedy film, The Enigma Planes, Trains & Automobiles Weekend features three races – a half and full marathon on Saturday with a reverse marathon on Sunday. All of these involve multiple laps around Caldecotte Lake in Milton Keynes with the reverse marathon on the same route but in a different direction.
Staying with Saturday, there is the Double or Quit race in Heanor, Derbyshire. Participants choose on the day whether to run 5 or 10 miles (there is a Nordic Walk option too) around a multi-terrain course in Shipley Park.
On to Sunday where multi-terrain is the theme. Starting with the Credenhill Canter, a charity 10k to fundraise for Hereford’s Special Baby Care Unit. Moving to the Ellesmere 10K in Shropshire there is a fast scenic course that has PB potential if runners are prepared to push it to the limit. Over to the Pershore Plum 10K which takes runners from the town into the country before heading back towards the finish with the stunning Pershore Abbey in the background.
Switching from races with small undulations the Winchcombe Hill Climb 10K and 5K is one with more than 650 feet of climbing. This off-road route includes a tough ascent up to the neolithic long barrow, Belas Knap although the views are worth the effort!
Finally, there are a couple of road races for devotees of tarmac. There is the BADGERS Atherstone 10K in Warwickshire and the Leominster 10K in Herefordshire.
