Dynamic Duo Smash It At Cardiff

Batman And Robin Set New Guinness World Record For Fastest Half Marathon at Cardiff

It was a case of 'Holy PB Batman' at Sunday’s (2 October) Cardiff Half Marathon as the caped crusader and his sidekick set a new Guinness World Record…

Carwyn Jones (Batman) and Mike Kallenberg (Robin) had targeted 'the fastest half marathon (male), run in superhero costumes' record of 1:15:39 set by Oliver Williams earlier this year. The pair had entered the race to raise funds for friend and fellow runner Rob Bugden who suffered severe injuries following a parachute accident in January. Rob is currently undergoing treatment at Stoke Mandeville Hospital.

Carwyn, Mike and Rob are all top-level athletes who had trained and raced together on a regular basis. Carwyn and Mike came first and second respectively in the 10,000m Welsh Championships in Cardiff while Rob represented Great Britain on the road and in cross-country.

Cardiff Half race day saw outstanding performances by the superhero pair who both smashed the world fancy dress record. Mike Kallenberg (Robin) crossed the line in a time of 1:09:33, very nearly overtaking one of the elite athletes and Carwyn Jones (Batman) was close behind in a time of 1:10:45.

The success of Sunday's half marathon has led to a decision to hold a full marathon in Wales in April 2017. Entries are now open for the 2017 Cardiff Half Marathon on Sunday 1 October. Visit the event website for more details.
