Flying Start For EMA 10K

runners at the EMA 10K

1,700 runners took to the internal roads at East Midlands Airport (EMA) for a unique event last Sunday (27 November). The EMA 10K and 2K Fun Run is a new race billed by organisers as 'a run unlike any other' and that was the case with a route that included previously restricted areas such as the airport fire station.

This sell-out event started and finished outside the Departures Hall with a two-lap course for the 10K on fast, flat roads around the airport grounds. Runners were invited to fundraise for official charity partner CLIC Sargent and all the car park fees were donated to CLIC Sargent.
Ben Rhodes of Heanor Running Club flew around the course to win the main event in 33:50. Matthew Nutt of Wimbledon Windmilers was second in 35:16 with Ian Duffin also of Heanor Running Club coming third in 35:49.
Lisa Deacon of Notts AC won the women’s race in 38:23 followed by Natalie Teece of Stilton Striders in 39:18. Clare Fowell of Ivanhoe Runners was third in 41:26.
There were prizes for the top three men and women plus age category awards; of particular mention were the generous prizes from two sponsors for the male and female winner. Donair Flying Club donated a one-hour flying lesson with the option to bring three guests and Jet2.com offered a free flight for two people to one of their winter ski destinations.

All finishers received an aeroplane-themed medal along with an EMA 10K long-sleeved running top and goody bag.
