Gamble And Co Pass With Flying Colours

Ben Gamble wins Flying Fox 10

Local hero Ben Gamble recorded another win yesterday (6 November) at the Flying Fox 10. The Tipton Harrier and Coles sponsored athlete continued his winning streak, crossing the finish line in 53:52.

Gamble had set a new course record of 53:35 in 2013 and was hoping to beat it but his 2016 time was 17 seconds outside of that. However, this win cemented his position at top of the men’s ranking table in the North Staffs Road Runners Association (NSRRA) league.

Close rival Carl Moulton of Boalloy was second in 56:28 with Matt Driver of Harborough AC coming third in 58:10.

Up-and-coming Kristina Defries of Trentham RC won the women’s race in 68:14 followed by Joanne Bentley of Stone MM in 68:48. Teammate Kirsty Stephenson of Stone MM took third place in 70:37.

Another winner and one who proved that age is no barrier to success is Trevor Goodwin who set a new over 80's record of 1:41:31. James Taylor of Lichfield RC was the midpoint runner in 78:27.

Other highlights include Amanda Wood of Newcastle (Staffs) AC first in her age group and Staffordshire champion for LV50: and eight runners achieving ‘compleat runner’ status by finishing all 23 races in the NSRRA yearly programme.

A field of 241 runners took part in this scenic, rural race that started and finished at All Saints First School, Standon in Staffordshire. It was a well-organised event by Stone MM that presents a challenge for runners of all ages and abilities. It also signals the end of the NSRRA programme of races. All finishers received a bottle of ‘Flying Fox’ ale and a goody bag.
