A 79-year-old proved that age is no barrier to success by completing his 200th Telford parkrun last Saturday (19 August). Telford Harrier James 'Jim' Hussey, an ex-RAF Physical Training Instructor (PTI), completed the 5k course in 37:54, achieving an age-graded score of 54.18% and finishing 382nd out of 443 runners.
After Saturday's run, Jim the Legend, as he is popularly known, was applauded by everyone who took part as a mark of respect. Reaching the milestone was only half the story with Jim's generous nature and championing of Telford parkrun accounting for the other half. Jim has only missed 12 parkruns in Telford’s history and shows no sign of slowing down with 250 a possible goal.
He is usually one of the first people to arrive each Saturday at Telford Town Park and carries out a recce of the course beforehand, mentioning any potential obstacles to the race director and volunteers. He supports and encourages runners of all ages with a few well-chosen words or phrases that motivate them to finish. Jim always goes back at the end of every run to accompany the last runner and/or walker.
