Saturday’s (12 November)) dull, overcast conditions were ‘PB Perfect’ for the Autumn Shakespeare with satisfaction all round. This autumn event is one of a series of three, seasonal Shakespeare races along with the spring and summer versions, organised by Raceways Running Events.
Runners had a choice of a 5k, 10k, half marathon or marathon, all of which took place at Long Marston Airfield near Stratford-upon-Avon. The fast, flat, tarmac surface was ideal for racing with many experienced runners choosing this event due to the high chance of achieving a PB.
This event involved running a single or multiple laps around the disused airfield depending upon the distance. Each lap was 5kin distance and best of all, there were no worries about navigation or traffic.
Phillip Harrison won the 5K in 17:42 followed by Darren Long of Bourton Road Runners in 18:39. Stephanie Lane, also of Bourton Road Runners was first lady in 19:14.
In the 10K, Jonathan Ashley was first across the line in 35:53 followed by Michael Tomkins in 36:45. Sarah Parkes won the women’s race in 37:00 followed by Tori Green in 39:00.
For the half marathon, James Eve of Headington Road Runners won in 1:15:23 with James Marshall coming second in 1:17:55. Sian Khan was the fastest woman, crossing the line in 1:25:08 followed by Melissa Venables of Spa Striders in 1:30:01.
In the marathon, Jason Merrick of Driffield Striders was first home in 2:46:40 followed by Joe Welch in 3:01:01. Alayne Malkin of TRA (Trail Running Association) won the women’s race in 3:16:23 followed by Deborah Church of Driffield Striders in 3:18:22.
