Two sets of legs are better than one as husband and wife Mark and Jenny Dalkins triumphed at last Thursday’s (12 July) JCB Lakeside 5. and they weren’t the only pair to take the top spot.
The Dalkins were amongst nearly 200 entrants at the 35th outing of this 5-mile road race and fundraiser for JCB’s designated charity, the NSPCC. There was also a 2.3 mile fun run for youngsters with both races starting from JCB’s World HQ at Rocester, Staffordshire. At 7pm and flanked by a JCB digger, the runners set off along a hilly route through factory grounds and around the scenic lake in front of the main building.
Both the men’s and women’s races were fiercely contested: the eventual winner Mark Dalkins of Cheadle RC battled for first place alongside Ian Salt of Uttoxeter RR and James Condlyffe of City of Stoke AC. They stayed together for most of the race until Dalkins increased the pace and opened a gap between him and the chasing duo, sprinting for the finish line in 28:41. Salt was second in 28:53 and Condlyffe third in 28:56.
In the women’s race, Jenny Dalkins of Cheadle RC was neck and neck with Joanne Bentley of Stone MM and this situation continued until the final half mile. Ms Dalkins kicked for the finish to win in 34:13 and make it a Dalkins Double. Joanne Bentley was second in 34:25 followed by Nia Nokes of Stafford Harriers in 36:06.
There was another family double in the Junior fun run as twins Bertie and Grace Ingram of City of Stoke AC made the podium. Bertie won in 11:57 with Grace coming third (and 1st Girl) in 13:31.
