It’s that time of year when many people take a trip abroad to relax or experience something new. However, you don’t need to leave the UK for a tour with what’s on offer here this weekend (12-13 August).
In For A Long Or Short Haul
The journey starts on Saturday in North Derbyshire with the Long Tour of Bradwell. This is one of 12 races in the Ultra Running Championships and involves 33 miles of tough terrain (trail/fell) in the Peak District with 6,300ft of climbing. The route takes in Kinder Scout, Stanage Edge and Bradwell Moor among others and there is a mandatory kit list due to the exposed nature of the terrain.
There is a shorter version or the Half Tour of Bradwell with 3,000ft of ascent and a similar route to the Long Tour including Hollins Cross, Lose Hill and Win Hill Woods. Both events start from the Bradwell Sports Pavilion and there are free, post-race refreshments to revive body and soul.
We stay on uneven, although less gruelling, terrain on Sunday at the Standish Woodland Chase in Stonehouse, Gloucestershire. The 10-mile race features a hilly course, which includes sections of the Cotswold Way. It is one of several events organised by Stroud & District AC and entries are available on the day.
Finally, for lovers of tarmac and hills, there is the Burton 10K organised by Hatton Darts RC. The climbs appear in the first three miles with the opportunity to shake out the legs on a downhill stretch at the end. It starts and finishes at Shobnall Leisure Complex and runners complete the last 400 metres on the athletics track.
