November is a great time to get away from Britain's grey skies for winter sun, fun and a run. Many head overseas for a marathon or half marathon somewhere warm but for a growing number of athletes one race is simply not enough.
Fortunately for those seeking a different challenge there are group travel experts like Sports Tours International who can whisk you away to events like International Running Challenge Lanzarote. This year's mind and body work out runs for four days from Sunday, 26 November.
The programme actually starts on Saturday, 25 November with a free to enter Breakfast Run from the magnificent Athletics Stadium at Club La Santa. This is merely the appetiser and an opportunity to meet fellow 'Challengers' and to register for the main event.
The International Challenge starts with the Vince Regan Memorial Classic 10K on flat roads around La Santa lagoon and continues with a 13k Ridge Run (round one of the volcanoes Lanzarote is famous for); a 5k Beach Run on soft sand at pretty Puerto del Carmen and the 21k La Vuelta de Tinajo Half Marathon with a classic stadium finish.
Competitors have to run on consecutive days and need to be proficient on flat asphalt, dirt trails, mountainous paths and sand as well as saving something for that final 300m on the track. Recovery between races is key to success and Club La Santa has every conceivable aid to the sportsperson when it comes to rest and relaxation.
Last year's overall winners were Fritz Koch (Germany, 2:54:13) and Pauline Curley (Ireland, 3:17:21) and this will be the 29th running of the tour. There were 250 competitors with overall finishing times running to 6:18:30 for the 49 kilometres.
