January Jogging Resolution In Derbyshire

Start 2017 with Jog Into January, a Derbyshire initiative providing sessions for complete beginners. The sessions are co-ordinated by JOG Derbyshire, a local project that aims to encourage people to get active by taking up jogging and are aimed at people new to jogging and those who have not run for some time.

The emphasis is on friendly, non-competitive and sociable sessions in the company of like-minded people and led by a qualified jog leader. The jog leader will help people to progress from walking to jogging in a supportive manner, with a view to achieving their first 5k.   
 
These sessions are low cost or free and from 30 minutes to an hour depending upon the group. At the end of 10 weeks, every attendee will receive a certificate that highlights his or her progress with a medal for those who complete a 5k. 
 
Over 4,000 people have participated in the Jog Into January scheme since its launch in 2015. The result is a flock of new converts to jogging who cite the benefits this has had on their physical and/or mental wellbeing.  
 
There are groups across the county with 25 signed up to deliver these sessions. One noticeable outcome is the positive effect these sessions have on people’s confidence, a view shared by Jog Duffield group member Deidre Phelan. She said: “With small children, getting to a gym regularly was impossible but Jog Into January taught me to jog and gave me the confidence to run, something I thought I could never do.”
