Last But Not Least

SignpostA Japanese runner was given a shock after being named the winner of a 3K despite finishing last. The school pupil won the Bayfarm Kasaoka Road Race 3K in Okayama on 5 February by default after every other participant was disqualified for running the wrong course.

A marshalling error saw 262 out of the 263 participants sent the wrong way. Despite the course being signposted, the signs were described as ‘hard to understand’. The race marshals were said to be more focussed on safety and security than giving directions.

The first child to finish was estimated to have run less than 2km. When race officials discovered only one participant had completed the full course, they decided to honour the child as the official winner.
