Jim the Legend celebrated his 80th birthday in style at Saturday’s (4 November) parkrun in Telford. It was a special day for a very special man.
Saturday 4 November at Telford was a red letter day for the parkrun stalwart who completed his 209th in the company of his running family. He was clapped and cheered from the start and members of Telford Harriers, other runners and volunteers waited at the finish to guide him in, all of which was accompanied by a round of applause. They turned out in force to celebrate a remarkable achievement from a well respected and admired gentleman.
Jim Hussey is the most regular attendee at Telford. He arrives at 8.15am every Saturday and recces the course, checking for any obstacles or changes and reporting these to the Event Director Kim Fawke and her team. This is one of several examples of his thoughtfulness along with his willingness to help others finish their run and always with kind words and encouragement that has made him a popular figure.
He was presented with a birthday cake at the finish complete with an image of him in his running glory that added to the experience. In return he had arranged for a delivery of 500 cupcakes as his way of marking the occasion.
Another highlight was the appearance of TV cameras from BBC Midlands who spoke to Jim and the Event Director that featured on their programme later that day.
Gentleman Jim Hussey went on social media to express his thanks to everyone for their presents and donations. It was a parkrun he will never forget.
