Long And The Short Of It

Shifnall Half Marathon

Wednesday 21 June was the longest day with crowds gathered at Stonehenge for the Summer Solstice. This weekend (24 – 25 June) sees a different kind of celebration with races from 5k to 50 miles happening across the Midlands.

We begin at the extreme end of the race distance spectrum with the NoMad Ultra on Saturday in Derbyshire. Participants can choose from three options: 50-mile, 50K or a Team Relay Challenge, starting and finishing in Breaston and following the multi-terrain Derby Nomad trail. All entrants are required to have basic navigation skills as the route is only partially marked.

Another ultra is on offer over at Cheltenham with the Boddington 10K, Marathon and 50K Run on Sunday. This event is organised by Beyond the Limitations and runners will be aiming to push past theirs as they tackle a multi-lap, flat rural route with minimal traffic.

For something shorter, we have the Shifnall Half Marathon at Idsall School in Shropshire. This is a scenic, multi-terrain race organised by Bloodwise (previously known as Leukaemia & Lymphoma Research) with all proceeds donated to charity. The majority of runners will be local but one entrant is travelling over from India to take part in the half marathon. Doctor Mukesh Birla is an experienced runner who had heard about Shifnall and Bloodwise and decided to enter with the aim of fundraising for the charity.

Another event with a choice of distances is the Grimsthorpe 5K, 10K, 10-mile and Half Marathon. This is organised by SBR Events and held at Grimsthorpe Castle in Lincolnshire with entries for Canicross and Nordic Walking entrants as well. All finishers will receive a bespoke medal and other goodies.
