Night time was the right time on Saturday (17 March) at Sherwood Pines as 228 runners took on the ‘Mini Beast from the East’ and won. They were aided in their efforts by hardy volunteers who provided a warm welcome on a bitterly cold night in Edwinstowe, Nottinghamshire.
New from Run2U Events and in conjunction with the Forestry Commission, the Active Forest Sherwood Pines Night Run was the chance for runners to experience trails and woodlands after dark. However, its fate lay in the balance due to an ‘Amber’ weather warning from the Met Office of snow and freezing temperatures for the East Midlands. Race director David Corbett and team monitored the forecast over a 24 hour period and kept in regular contact with their Safety Advisory Group before making a final decision to go ahead.
The run started at 7pm with runners following a 7K route around the Forest Park with cheerful marshals encouraging them all the way as they tackled mud, snow and Arctic conditions. Amongst the entrants was a team of four runners from ABM Precast Solutions who were fundraising for Bluebell Wood Children’s Hospice.
Nickesh Patel was first across the line in 27:46 followed by David Fletcher in 28:23. Brent Stevenson was third in 30:32.
Dace Fenton of Retford AC was first female and 6th overall, finishing in 31:41. Claire Watson finished only three seconds behind in 31:44 with Kahli Johnson of Mansfield Harriers third in 32:20.
Feedback has been overwhelmingly positive..... “excellent event, I really enjoyed it despite the conditions” and, “great run and brilliant volunteers and marshals”.
A vote of thanks from David Corbett who said: "We hope everyone will join us again next year.”
