There are several events this weekend to help shake off the post-Christmas blues. And with distances from 5k to marathon there are lots of race options.
Tomorrow (Saturday 7 January) sees the No Walk in the Park 5K, part of a regular series of races organised by North Derbyshire Running Club. These monthly time trials start at 9.30am on the first Saturday of every month at Queen’s Park, Chesterfield.
Moving from sprint to endurance, tomorrow's calendar also lists the first of the two Winter Enigma marathons with the second event on Sunday. The Winter Enigma Marathon 1 involves multiple laps of a course around Caldecotte Lake in Milton Keynes, in a clockwise direction. Entrants have to run 7.5 laps to complete a marathon.
There's an about turn at the Winter Enigma Marathon 2 on Sunday (8 January). This event follows the same course with runners completing the same number of laps but this time in an anti-clockwise direction. There is a bespoke spinning medal for finishers of each marathon.
Our next race is almost but not quite marathon distance. The Naunton Nearly 19 is billed as an easy start to 2017 though with several hills and unpredictable January weather, it could be anything but! It starts in the attractive village of Naunton in Gloucestershire with runners following an 18.3-mile, single loop course through several Cotswold villages. Everyone who finishes receives an item of Cotswold Running race clothing and a memento.
For something shorter, there is the Cliveden Cross Country race. This 6-mile event is organised by Burnham Joggers Running Club and takes place on a tough course in the grounds of The National Trust’s Cliveden House.
To finish, there is a change of surface and distance with a new Live 5K event in Nottingham jointly organised by Virtual Runner and Perfect Motion.
