A field of 2,000 plus enjoyed what is regarded as one the UK's top 10ks on Sunday (10 May) at Market Drayton. It was a red letter day for fastest woman Kim Fawke (Centurion RC), who raced round in a PB time of 34:56, setting a new course record in the process.
It was also a special occasion for 10k first-timer Harriet Murray who reported on Facebook: "I ran my first ever 10K today! It was the hardest thing I've ever had to do BUT I DID IT! I had aimed to run the course in 2 hours but I got round in 1:44:12 seconds!
"I never would have made it round without the support of the people of Market Drayton who came out and cheered not only me but every other runner, the race marshals made sure none of us were run over by cars and who also cheered us on. Special mention to the race organisers who made sure everything ran smoothly.
"Thank you to every person who saw me struggling in the last 2k and decided to walk along side me rather than just go home, it is people like you that make Market Drayton 10K great! I don't think I will ever forget the feeling I got running though two rows of cars, all honking for me with people all around cheering for me!"
Michelle Richardson was the midpoint runner in 53:44 and the field closed when Harriet Murray and her mum Sophia crossed the line on 1:44:12.
In the men's race it was a 1-2 for Wolverhampton & Bilston AC with James Skelton breaking the tape on 31:55 ahead of Paul Hammond (32:26)
