There was nothing to choose between the two men who ran neck and neck throughout the race to produce an exceptional display of running with both posting sub-24 finishing times. Richard Allen of Bracknell AC came third in 24:29.
The women’s race saw another close finish. Lauren Howarth of Leigh Harriers won in 27:23, only one second separating her from Sonia Samuels of Sale Harriers who followed in 27:24. Outstanding performances from both women in a quality field. An in-form Kate Holt of City of Stoke AC was third in 27:46
The midpoint runner was Nicola Jennings of Trentham RC who finished in 40:33.
954 runners lined up at 11am for the 2017 New Balance Alsager 5. The race started and finished at Alsager Leisure Centre with a fast, flat course and perfect weather conditions making it an ideal test of early season fitness levels.
One of the fastest 5-milers in the UK, it was ably organised by Ken Rushton and his team who welcome runners of all ages and abilities, from those looking for their first race to the seasoned competitor. It’s also the first race in the North Staffs Road Runners Association (NSRRA) series.
The Alsager 5 received a ‘thumbs up’ from all who took part with many vowing to test themselves again in 2018.
