A change of venue due to heavy rainfall over the past week did little to dampen the spirits at Saturday’s (30 January) Brooks Midland Cross-Country Championships. Organisers decided to change the race location to Prestwood Hall (Loughborough) as large sections of the original venue at Stafford Common were waterlogged.
Despite testing conditions on the day, competition proved fierce with little separating those at the top of the field. Stoke AC’s Alex Brecker, in superb form since the turn of the year, took first place over the 12k course in 37:22, closely followed by Notts AC pair Alastair Watson (37:31) and Jonathan Thewlis (37:42). 351 runners took part in the men’s competition, with Notts AC taking the club title.
In the women’s field, Charnwood AC’s Jane Potter managed to successfully defend her title with a winning time of 27:29, with City of Stoke’s Katie Holt in second position (27:47). Potter’s club mate (and sister) Juliet rounded off the top trio of female performers in 28:11. Birchfield Harriers led the points total for the women’s team competition.
Race photos’ Bryan Dale was on hand to take some impressive shots of Alex Brecker and Jane Potter.
