There was a bumper turnout at the first session of the new run4health Shropshire C25K programme on Tuesday (10 September). 120+ beginners embarked upon their journey towards positive mental health and wellbeing in the company of friends old and new.
University Centre Shrewsbury, Energize, Shrewsbury Colleges, Shropshire Mind and Shropshire Council along with GP’s from local practices joined forces to organise this initiative. The sessions started on Tuesday evening at 6.45pm for a 7pm start and were led by mental health champion and head coach at Shropshire Shufflers, Glenn Francke.
Glenn was supported by run-leaders, coaches and experienced runners who came together to deliver a guided session in a safe and friendly environment. The first session was held in The Quarry, Shrewsbury, the location for the town's parkrun: the aim is for everyone to run together at Shrewsbury parkrun on Saturday 16 November.
The organisers hope participants will enjoy the physical and mental benefits of running in an attractive location that will become a lifelong habit. This programme is based upon the NHS Couch to 5K programme but with a few adjustments designed to make it more fun and designed for those who haven’t run for some time as well as newcomers.
People of all ages and backgrounds were in good spirits as they learnt the fundamentals of running, supported by Glenn and Co and followed by coffee and cake in Palmers Cafe. Everyone was given homework to do in the form of dynamic stretches, walk/jog and a cool down which they complete in between the sessions.
