Newcastle (Staffs) AC had two reasons to celebrate with Felix McGrath and Leah Whiston winning at Sunday’s (3 March) Cheadle Spring 5. This was the second win in a week for Whiston.
At 10am on a damp morning, 150 runners, Felix and Leah amongst them, set off from The Cheadle Academy to follow an undulating course around this market town in the Staffordshire Moorlands. The race attracts a small yet determined field within the county who ‘spring’ into action at this 5 miler and Sunday was no different.
A strong display of running by Felix McGrath led to him winning the 2019 Cheadle Spring 5 in 25:39. Vinnie Martin of City of Stoke AC held off a challenge from his teammate James Condlyffe to finish second in 27:39. Condlyffe was third in 27:46.
Leah Whiston showed her cross country credentials recently at Knype Pool, winning the women’s race on a challenging, off-road course. She was equally adept on the road at Cheadle, surging ahead to become the fastest female in 31:44 and 13th overall. Maria Kennaway of Cheadle RC was second in 33:03 followed by Jenny Dalkins in 33:45.
The organisers, Cheadle RC had an extensive prize list that included the first three men and women and age category winners. There was a medal for every finisher.
In addition to the main event was a Fun Run for children that started after the main race and involved two laps around the school and field with a medal and goody bag for the youngsters.
