Fun In The Mud In North Staffs

action from the North Staffs Cross Country league

The second fixture in the North Staffs Cross Country League (NSCCL) series took place last Saturday (24 October) at Stafford Common. The cold, wet weather proved to be an incentive for City of Stoke AC who had successes in the junior and senior races.

The senior women’s race saw a second win for Lucy Holt (City of Stoke AC) with Kim Fawkes (Lawley RC) in second place followed by Mandy Vernon (Trentham RC) in third. Ryan Holroyd (City of Stoke AC) made his club debut in fine style, winning the senior men’s with team mate Will Neill in second place. Mark Dalkins (Cheadle RC) took third.

There was another win for Stoke in the Under 11 Boys race.  Jake Barker was first home with Roman Hodgson (Deeside) in second and Sebastien Rowe (Staffordshire Moorlands AC) in third.

With a forecast of heavy rain on the day, runners knew they would be in for a challenging race! The muddy conditions didn’t deter the local clubs who fielded teams in all age categories and distances. Young and old tackled a muddy, undulating course with grit and determination in that all-important battle for points and positions.

It was another good day at the office for City of Stoke AC. Their U17 Men’s team took first place overall with the Senior Men also taking first place in a highly competitive Division 1. Trentham RC continues to contest for the top spot with a win for their Senior Women’s team in Division 1 and second place for their Senior Men’s team.

Performances of note came from Crewe & Nantwich AC, Newcastle (Staffs) AC, Macclesfield Harriers, Deeside AC and Vale Royal AC. However, all runners deserve a round of applause for their willingness to turn out for their club and try their utmost. For some, it was the first time they had run cross country since their schooldays! The large numbers of runners and impressive results show the enduring popularity of cross country. A low-cost, accessible form of racing that is a firm favourite in the running community.

Thanks to Stafford Harriers, officials and volunteers for organising another successful event. The next fixture is on the Saturday 14 November at Park Hall Country Park, Weston Coyney.

The full set of results is available on the NSCCL website. Plus great photos from Bryan Dale at his website.
