There were cheers all round for Derby AC’s Rachel Olivant at Sunday’s (13 August) Burton 10K. She posted a win and new course record on a hilly route around the East Staffordshire town.
In the main event, Lloyd Biddell of Mercia Fell Runners sprinted towards the finish on the athletics track at Shobnall Leisure Complex to win the Burton 10K in 32:38. Matt Bickerstaff of Heanor RC was close behind to come second in 32:49. Ashley Hurdman of Hatton Darts RC finished a minute behind to take third place in 33:49.
Rachel Olivant was in impressive form to win the women’s race in 37:53 and set a new female course record, beating the existing record of 37:59 held by Abbey Norman since 2011. This was Rachel’s second victory in Burton this year: her first win was at the Burton 10-mile on 21 May where she finished in 62:20. She is equally strong on the track with victories in the 1500 and 3000 metres at the North of England League Division 3EC.
Tracy Hinxman of Hatton Darts RC was second in 39:25 with Rebecca Harrison of Cheadle RC third in 40:14. The last runner crossed the line in 1:15:34 out of a field of 269 entrants.
It was a good day's work for the host club, Hatton Darts RC, with second and third places in a popular race that is part of the Burton & District Summer League. It is the sixth race in the series with the Tamworth 5 next on 17 September.
