Olympian Whittle Wins At Gayton Run

Laura Whittle at the Rio Olympics

Sunday (22 January) saw an exceptional display of running by Rio Olympian Laura Whittle to claim 5K victory at Gayton Run. The 2007 European U23 5,000m champion and member of Royal Sutton Coldfield AC showed the field a clean pair of heels to finish in 16:45. Ben Hawkins of Warwick Uni Tri was second (and 1st male) in 17:52 with Nick Lobb coming third in 18:16.

Rob Elmore of Leighton Buzzard AC won the 10K in 34:54 followed by Antonio Fischer in 37:31. Ross Wood of Marshall Milton Keynes Athletics Club (MMKAC) came third in 38:41. Rosanna Andrews of Northampton Road Runners won the women’s race in 39:44. Deborah Smith was second in 41:42 with Ella Townsend coming third in 42:56. The last 10K runner crossed the line in 1:24:02.

A field of 236 runners (69 in the 5K and 167 in the 10K) lined up for the sixth Gayton Run, organised by On Your Marks Events. Both races started at 11am from Wakelin Farm in Northampton with a choice between a flat 5K and a hilly 10K; with the latter containing a sting in the tail - Gayton Hill.

The 10K runners climbed this hill on their way back to Gayton village where they picked up the 5K route and headed towards the finish. Both routes featured stunning views of the Northamptonshire countryside.

There were trophies for the top three in the 5K and 10K and a medal for all finishers.
