Omar Ahmed showed some nifty footwork at Sunday’s (20 January) Speedway 10K as he raced to victory against a top quality field of athletes.
The Winter Speedway 10K is one of two races organised by Chepstow Harriers that is purely about running fast. There were no medals, t-shirts or goody bags; instead it was a throwback to the days when a runner put the hammer down from the start, alongside others who were doing the same.
It was open to talented club runners wanting to test themselves on a very flat, two lap course in Beachley, Chepstow with generous cash prizes and time bonuses up for grabs. There was an additional prize of £100 donated by Chepstow Garden Centre for the first man to run sub-30 and the first woman sub-34.
14 runners finished in 33:00 or under in the 2018 Summer Speedway 10K and the organisers hoped for double that in this winter version. Amongst those capable of this and aiming for first place was Cardiff AAC’s Matt Clowes who won last June’s 10K in 29:19.
However he had to settle for third place behind Omar Ahmed who clocked 29:17. It was a classy display of running by the Birchfield Harrier who was second last year in the Simplyhealth Great Birmingham Half Marathon. Ahmed was followed by Jake Smith of Cardiff AAC in 29:45 with teammate Clowes two seconds behind.
For the women, only one second separated Caryl Jones of Swansea Harriers and Eleanor Davis of Preston Harriers. Jones was the first female in 33:30 and Davis the second female in 33:31. Lauren Cooper of Parc Bryn Bach RC was third in 36:28.
