It’s Christmas this weekend and what better way to celebrate than a parkrun. And there are lots of options with events taking place across the region on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day.
Tomorrow Saturday (24 December), sees parkruns happening as normal and at their usual 9am start time. Many are getting into the festive spirit with a fancy dress theme so expect to see Santas, elves, snowmen, reindeers and anything seasonal.
Some locations are holding an extra parkrun on Christmas Day and New Year’s Day, ideal for burning off the extra calories consumed at this time. A parkrun first thing on Christmas morning sets the tone, with runners in a variety of costumes ready to enjoy the day (this correspondent did the 2015 Hanley Christmas Day parkrun dressed as an elf!).
Some parkruns such as newcomer Cannock Chase are encouraging people to get fit in the New Year via their weekly events. They are also helping to promote a new 10-week beginners running course, organised by Rugeley Runners to get people from their couch to 5k by the end.
The Christmas Compendium page on the parkrun website
contains a list of events over the Christmas and New Year holiday. Check to see which are going ahead.
On Monday 26 December, there is the Barrow Runners Boxing Day Handicap, a 6-mile road race now in its 34th year. The slowest runners set off first with everyone aiming to finish by 12 noon. Refreshments are available to purchase after the race.
