Ancient Test For Ultra Runners

Run to Stones

Over 2,000 people are set to take on 100k of one of UK’s most historic paths this weekend at the Dixons Carphone Race to the Stones.

Described by organisers as the UK’s most iconic ultra marathon, the race tracks the Ridgeway, an ancient pathway from Oxfordshire through the North Wessex Downs and on to Wiltshire.

Runners finish at the 5000 year old Avebury Stone Circle in Wiltshire. On the route, they encounter Bronze Age hill forts, neolithic burial chambers, Roman river crossings, culminating in the largest neolithic stone circle complex in Europe at Avebury.

Runners include Vassos Alexander, the sport presenter on the Chris Evans Breakfast Show; Robert Young, otherwise known as Marathon Man, who has averaged a marathon a day for the last 14 months and blogger Sophie Radcliffe.

The race starts at 8am on Saturday 11 July. While some will run the route, well over half of the field will walk. Some will opt to complete the route non-stop, some will take it in two days and stay overnight at Base Camp, starting again at 8am on Sunday. Others will cover half the distance on either Saturday or Sunday.
