A record turnout and 57 new PB’s was the order of the day at the Wolverhampton parkrun on Saturday (9 April). Runners and volunteers gathered near The Band Stand in West Park, taking advantage of the fine weather that also attracted 39 first timers to the event.
The sunny conditions appeared to have had the same effect on the volunteers with a full rota available on the day and for next week’s parkrun. They were supervised by a core team of dedicated enthusiasts who worked hard to ensure that this 162nd event was a success.
There were congratulations for milestone runner Tom Luxton who recently completed his 100th parkrun. He presented the parkrun organisers with a new barcode scanner as recognition of their time and effort, which they put to good use!
Luke Vine of Tipton Harriers was the fastest over the 5k distance in a time of 15:41 and a new PB. He also recorded the best Age Grade score for the SM20-24 category with 83.10%. Emma Boyden was fastest female in 22:55.
Two other runners logged best Age Grade scores: Martin Williams of Wolverhampton & Bilston AC graded 85.49% for his time of 15:44 in the VM35-39 category, coming second overall; Tina Smith of Wolverhampton & Bilston AC graded 85.18% for her time of 25:18 in the VW65-69 category and was 100th overall.
A special mention went to the ‘Jolly Joggers’; a beginners 12 week running course, organised in January by Dudley MIND who encourage people with mental health problems to try a sport or physical activity. The organisers have asked for a volunteer to assist their Run Leader during their weekly sessions.
