Between 1979 and 1993, three men held the world record for the classic running distance of a mile. The names are legend - Coe, Ovett and Cram - the stars who created a golden era of British athletics. Now one of that select group, Steve Cram, wants to introduce modern runners to the iconic mile distance.
Run Like A Legend is the brainchild of the former world champion and is being organised by his company, Events of the North. The event, supported by Nike, will take place during the Run Expo festival at Manchester's EventCity, on Sunday 20 March.
Run Like A Legend will see waves of runners tackle two laps of a purpose built 800m course within the confines of Run Expo. Milers will race inside the main exhibition hall at EventCity and waves of participants will set off every 15 minutes. Every runner will be chip timed and all entrants will receive a bespoke event Nike running t-shirt and goody bag, as well as free entry into Run Expo.
The Run Like A Legend mile concept has the potential to provide a bridge from the mass market 10k to marathon participants to the classic athletic distances and Steve Cram says: "The mile is probably the most iconic distance in athletics and every aspiring runner wants to test themselves against it at some point. We have created Run Like A Legend to offer that opportunity to people of all experiences and abilities.
Run Like A Legend will be run in waves which are time graded, so participants will be able to run alongside others of a similar pace. In addition the event will offer the thrill of track racing with spectators up close to the race action.
Organisers expect around 2,000 runners to take part in Run Like A Legend. Alongside the mass participation event, there will be elite men’s and women’s races, featuring some of the UK’s best up milers.
The entry fee of £24 (£12 for the junior event) includes the Nike goody bag and t-shirt and entry into the Run Expo itself, which also incorporates the Triathlon, Bike and Swim Expos. The expo will run from 18-20 March and will showcase the latest sports gear and equipment on the market, live coaching demos and seminars, celebrity guest appearances, and competitions and prize giveaways.
