Despite a torrential downpour for much of the day, both the Sherwood Pines 10K and 5K attracted their largest fields to date. The races, which took place in Sherwood Pines Forest Park in Nottinghamshire, were won by John Wadelin (34:07) and Alex Herron (18:09).
Organised in association with Retford AC, the races are seen as key fixtures in the Midlands calendar, with a nice mix of seasoned campaigners and those new to the sport. With the forest offering a beautiful backdrop, runners were able to discover the delights of trail running on this gently undulating forest and family park course away from traffic.
Over 430 runners successfully completed the 10K event, Erewash Valley’s Wadelin secured a comfortable victory ahead of Sleaford Striders’ Andrew Richardson (36:52), while Claphan Chasers’ Phillipa Benton led the female field home in 43:38. In the 5K competition, Alex Heron took first in 18:09, just 6 seconds ahead of Paul Wass, with Retford AC’s Amber Scott winning the women’s competition.
A recent post on the Retford AC website read: ‘Well what a wet day it turned out to be but nothing could dampen the spirits of all the lovely competitors who braved the elements to make it a very special day. Special thanks to all the marshals, volunteers and those lovely people from Bluebell Wood who were manning the water stations.’
