Sichel Caps Off 2015 With World Record

SichelOrkney-based William Sichel rounded off 2015 with an impressive third place at last weekend’s Bislett International Indoor Endurance Festival 48 Hour race in Oslo, Norway. Perhaps more importantly, Sichel finished first in the over 60 category with a new World Age-Group Record, meaning he is one step closer to setting 165 ultra running records before his 65th birthday in 2018.

The weekend of racing, which also included 6, 12 and 24 hour events, is the largest indoor ultra marathon event Europe has ever seen. Over the course of 48 hours, Sichel, 62, gradually worked his way from the back of the field to finish in the top positions, covering a total of 196 miles.

On his strategy for the race, Sichel reflected: “As always happens, people start too fast, eat too much and get sick.  I just stick to my plan and used my experience to run a more even pace throughout the race.  Sometimes it’s important to see the whole race as a whole and not be too myopic.”

While there were concerns that the two-lane track could become congested at points, Sichel didn’t see this as affecting his performance: “To be honest over-crowding wasn’t too bad but I did find it far too noisy a lot of the time and had to run with ear plugs. The high noise level also interfered with my system of having quick 20 minute naps as I couldn’t get to sleep.”

With the 2015 racing season coming to a close for Sichel, his last event of the season saw him take one step towards achieving his project165.com
