Sichel 2016 Plan Includes Comrades

Willian SichelOrkney-based ultra runner William Sichel has released details of his race programme for the year ahead. Despite having successfully completed his pursuit of completing 165 ultra running records, 2016 looks likely to be extremely busy for Sichel, who will open his racing with next month’s British 100K road running Championships in Perth, Scotland.

At the close of the year, 62-year-old Sichel set 21 new age-group records at last month’s Bislett Indoor International Endurance Festival 48 Hour race in Oslo – a feat that allowed him to complete project165.com. For 2016, Sichel will mix up his racing patterns by competing in some shorter distances (marathons) with longer events, such as a 6 Day road race in France.

Sichel comments: “One of the main features of this year’s races is that I’m going to return to some shorter events over the first half of the year.  This is something I haven’t done for a great many years, but things just fell into place this year, so I’m excited to give it a go.”

Following Perth, William will at long last tackle the iconic Comrades Marathon (55 miles) in South Africa – the World’s largest ultra marathon with 20,000 starters.

On the South African event, Sichel adds: “in some ways I should have done this about 20 years ago but it just didn’t happen.  I’m under no illusions about how difficult it will be to do this on a ‘one-off’ basis.  It will be a huge challenge.”
