Despite the cold weather, strong headwind and an even muddier course than usual, an impressive 579 runners turned out for the Sleaford Half Marathon on Sunday (22 February). The event, which started around 6 miles northwest of Sleaford saw Derby Triathlon Club’s Chris Nicol take top place, with Phillippa Taylor leading the female field home.
Known for offering a relatively challenging route, one mile of which is off-road, the course saw competitors start and finish at the RAF College Cranwell Sports Pavillion. Organised by Sleaford Striders, the half marathon is seen as a favourite for club runners from Lincolnshire and beyond.
Even in the testing conditions, winner Chris Nicol recorded a time of 1:14:58, just less than a minute ahead of second-placed Dan Hardy (1:15:53) of Totley AC, with Lincoln Wellington’s Les Ball in third (1:16:17).
In the women’s competition, course record holder Phillippa Taylor enjoyed another fine performance to secure a comfortable victory in 1:27:59, with Anna O’Hare following (1:29:59) and Sharon Orridge (1:30:28) rounding off the top trio. The mid-point competitor was Dan Todd in 1:50:25, while the field closed on 3:17:07.
