Sheffield Running Club’s Will Beauchamp fought off the challenge of Russell Maddams to successfully defend his title at Sunday’s Southport Half Marathon. The race built on the foundations of last year’s inaugural event with 900 runners finishing, nearly 50% up on 2013.
The course, modified from last year, started in Victoria Park before heading south along Coastal Road and the Promenade, under the pier and through Kings Gardens. Runners returned to Marine Drive and the pier once more, then left at Weld Road Roundabout to return for a finish in Victoria Park.
Beauchamp, who has been in impressive form throughout the year, finished in 1:13:03, with Maddams second in 1:13:46; Paul Sankey (1:14:02.) was third. The defending champion tweeted: “Race won, title defended, recovery with @nouriSh_me_now. Sometimes, things just work out well! #perfectweekend!”
In the women’s competition, Kilbarchan’s Gemma Rankin finished well ahead of the field in 1:19:07, with Vicky Bryant and Jenny Clague following. Alan Appleton was the mid-point runner in 1:58:07, while the last competitor came home in 3:06:08.
