Damp and drizzly conditions did not stop Mandy Vernon (Trentham RC) from winning the senior women’s race at Park Hall on Saturday 14 November. The accomplished Staffordshire runner took top honours in a fiercely contested race, beating Tasha Stone (City of Stoke AC) into second place with Amber Reed (Keele University AC) in third.
Park Hall Country Park was the venue for the third fixture in the North Staffordshire Cross Country League series and the undulating course proved to be a challenge in many ways. A combination of muddy sections and hard, stony trails tested everyone’s stamina and fitness not to mention their determination; especially for a female runner from Newcastle (Staffs) Tri Club who finished the course wearing only one shoe!
In spite of the weather, there were noteworthy performances from runners across all age groups from clubs in Staffordshire, Cheshire and North Wales. There were wins for Jake Barker (City of Stoke AC) in the U11 Boys and Will Neill (City of Stoke AC) in the Senior Men’s races. And victories for James Jones (Deeside AC) in the U13 Boys, Neisha Roberts (Deeside AC) in the U11 Girls and Bethan Dowsett (Deeside AC) in the U15 Girls races.
Jacob Droogmans from Newcastle (Staffs) AC took first place in the U15 Boys race and Christian Smith of Wrexham AAC was first over the line in the U17 Men’s race. The U13 Girls race saw first place for Eden Schiller of Staffordshire Moorlands AC and another win, this time for Louisa Whittingham of Macclesfield Harriers in the U17 Women’s race.
In the overall standings, Trentham RC is in first and second place in the Senior Women and Senior Men Division One. City of Stoke AC is in second place in the Senior Men Division One. Results will be decided at the fourth fixture at Uttoxeter Racecourse on Saturday 12 December.
Thanks to Tim Twentyman of Newcastle (Staffs) AC for additional information and to Trentham RC/Blythe Bridge Running Club for a well organised event.
