There is a choice of paces at this weekend’s (19-20 August) races. Jog, trot or run, either on your own or with a canine companion and if you like to swim and cycle as well there is always triathlon.
Most of the action takes place on Saturday beginning with two events at Markeaton Park in Derby. There is the Big Fun Run Derby 5K starting at 11am with the emphasis on a non-competitive, enjoyable run for people of all ages. Alternately, put your best foot (and paw) forward at the Dog Jog Derby 5K starting at 2pm and receive a doggy bag containing medals for you and your faithful hound plus other goodies.
There is a jump from 5k to 13.1 miles next and the inaugural Erewash Half Marathon followed by a sprint triathlon on Sunday. This new half marathon is a point to point, off-road race along canal towpaths between Langley Mill and West Park Leisure Centre in Nottingham and uses a time trial format where runners start at intervals according to ability. The route is mile marked, there are four, floating water stations and refreshments at the finish.
It is another step up in distance, this time to marathon for the Birmingham Canal Canter Marathon (and Mini Canter - 18 miles). This is a LDWA event so open to both walkers and runners who follow a route that encompasses Birmingham's canal network. The marathon route passes the Stratford-upon-Avon Canal, Grand Union Canal and Birmingham-Worcester Canal amongst others with plenty of checkpoints on both routes including a cake stop.
