Entries have opened for the Stone 5, a challenging mid-week race on Wednesday 20 May that always attracts a good turnout from local clubs. They are keen to test themselves while showing their support for the organiser and photographer Mick Hall.
There are more than a few ‘lumps and bumps’ on this two lap course that starts and finishes at Oulton Cricket Club, Stone in Staffordshire. It is hilly as to be expected in this area but the countryside is worth sore legs and hopefully, there will be warm, sunny weather as was the case last year.
This is a reserve race in the North Staffordshire Road Runners Association programme and as such, a fair few runners will be battling for those valuable points that determine overall standings and group awards. The event was won last year by Daniel Soltys of Stone MM with Kelly Butler the winning female – will they return to defend their titles? PB pacers are on hand to guide anyone irrespective of ability towards their target time.
The race is held to raise funds for Lymphoma Action who supported Mick throughout his treatment and subsequent all-clear after being diagnosed with lymphoma cancer in 2017. He appreciated their help during that stressful period and created the Stone 5 to thank them with the backing of the running community.
The race starts at 7.15pm and runners complete two laps before a last-gasp dash across the finish line. A bespoke medal is their reward along with a free buffet in the cricket club.
