Last Saturday (18 September) members of Newcastle (Staffs) AC honoured a sadly missed teammate at their local parkrun in Hanley, Stoke-on-Trent. They wore their club vests as a mark of respect for Steve Askey, a popular runner at the club, at Newcastle (Staffs) Tri Club and of the local running community. Tragically, Steve collapsed and died during a training session two years ago and this parkrun was a way of remembering 'a warm, friendly guy who was well-liked by everyone, young and old'.
A stalwart of Newcastle AC, Steve Askey was a first class runner and a valued member of the club committee who gave generously of his skills, experience and time. This included maintaining the club website and helping to organise events. He was always there to offer support and encouragement at training sessions and races and made a lasting impression at the club.
Several club members achieved PB’s at the Hanley parkrun, satisfying personal goals whilst paying tribute to a great runner and an all-round decent man. Steve’s mother and sister attended the memorial run as spectators and said: “How touched and grateful we are that you have still remembered Steve after all this time. Many, many thanks for your touching gesture”.
