We are into August and the fine weather is back, all of which is good news for race organisers after last weekend’s biblical conditions. It’s a good weekend (4-5 August) to explore the joys of off-road running.
Our trail trip sets off on Saturday in Oxfordshire and the Summer Mapledurham 10K. This is the last race in the Summer Series with a scenic route in the riverside grounds of Mapledurham Estate, encompassing woodlands, hills, fields and private roads. The race starts at 6pm and the forecast is for warm weather so ensure you are sufficiently hydrated. However, there are two water stations on the course with more water available at the start and finish.
There are more trails on Sunday at the Cannock Chase 10K in Staffordshire. A stunning location that is popular with runners, walkers and mountain bikers due to the woodlands, forest, open heathlands and flowing trails. Now in its fifth year, the race is all off-road – no sections of tarmac at all, making it ideal for any runner looking to make the switch from the hard stuff. Note: the terrain is uneven and appropriate footwear is needed.
The final off-road foray takes place in the scenic Forest of Dean in Gloucestershire. The Forest Trail Race is suitable for families as well as individuals with four events to choose from – 1K, 10K, Half Marathon and a Marathon. Runners complete one lap for the 10K, two laps for the half marathon and four laps for the marathon, starting and finishing at the Speech House Hotel. There are free activities, eg archery for everyone to try.
