Telford got the New Year’s Eve celebrations off to a vibrant start with their party-themed parkrun on Saturday (31 December). A bubbly crowd of 429 runners, many wearing brightly coloured clothing, finished the final parkrun of 2016 at Telford Town Park.
And there was more than one reason to celebrate with several people achieving their 50th, 100th, 200th and 250th parkrun. For others, their reward was a new PB including this correspondent who was amongst the runners.
The course was a mixture of trail and tarmac with runners starting from the Visitor Centre in the Town Park before proceeding around a small and large lap of Randlay Pool. They continued along this fast, flat route before turning left and up the ‘hill of opportunity’ towards the finish.
Plenty of support from the friendly, cheerful marshals who encouraged everyone, from the front-runners to those at the back, made it an enjoyable event. There was an added bonus with the presence of a photographer from The Shropshire Star, with the images due to appear in today's (Monday’s) edition.
Telford AC had their own reason to celebrate with eight of their runners finishing in the top 10. Their fastest man, Jonathan Hockey, was first home in 16:36 and achieved an age-graded score of 78.61%. Claire Martin, also of Telford AC, was the first lady to finish, coming home in 17:16, (age-graded 89.77%). Their junior section was equally well represented with Dylan Gillett (JM15-17 age category) finishing third in 16:58 (80.75%).
