Martin Williams was first to cross the gorge and the finish line at the Ironbridge Half Marathon (Sunday 12 March). The Tipton Harrier won in 1:14:47 nearly two minutes ahead of Craig Taylor (1:16:38) and Christian Evans of Telford AC third in 1:17:15.
Lauren Draper of Bridgnorth RC won the women’s race in 1:28:34 followed by Rachel Parker of Mercia Fell Runners in 1:29:18. Susannah Gill took third place in 1:29:44.
Steven Page of Perton Runways was the midpoint runner in 1:59:52.
A field of 746 set off at 10.00am from Telford Town Park Arena along an undulating, one-lap multi-terrain course. They proceeded down the Silkin Way and past the Coalport China Museum into the Severn Gorge. They continued along the old Severn Valley Railway line before pounding their way across the World’s first (and famous) Iron Bridge. Cheered on by members of the public they headed up towards Silkin Way and the finish at the Town Park.
Organised by Telford Harriers this popular event had sold out on 6 March, a testament to its continuing attraction for runners wanting a challenging race steeped in history. It was sponsored by Busch UK Ltd with proceeds donated to Severn House Hospice.
There were prizes for the first, second and third male and female; first three senior men and senior women and the first three male and female vets in the usual age categories.
All finishers received a medal, technical T-shirt and goody bag and there were food and drink stalls plus other entertainments on offer at the Town Park.
