City of Stoke AC’s Alex Brecker helped his club to victory at last Saturday’s (17 December) cross-country race at Stafford Common. Brecker, 22 from Betley was first across the line in 25:58. Claire Martin of Telford AC won the women's race in 20:24. Bothe races saw impressive displays of athleticism from both runners who led their races from the start.
Alex Brecker’s win, along with strong performances from his club in the other categories, secured the top spot for City of Stoke AC in the men’s final team positions in Division One. In the final team positions for the women, Trentham RC’s senior ladies were overall champions in Division One.
Other final category winners included Telford AC U11 Boys, City of Stoke AC U13 Boys, Macclesfield Harriers U15 Boys and Crewe & Nantwich AC U17 Men’s and for the girls - Macclesfield Harriers U11 Girls, Crewe & Nantwich AC U13 Girls, Macclesfield Harriers U15 Girls and Newcastle (Staffs) AC U17 Women’s.
Stafford Common was the last race in the North Staffs Cross Country League (NSCCL) series. The series was planned as four races – Winsford, Parkhall, Keele University and Stafford Common although Keele was cancelled for logistical and safety reasons.
This annual event is popular with runners from across the West Midlands and North Wales who enjoy the challenging courses that each race presents and there was a good turnout for the junior and senior races throughout.
